  • Antwerpen-Centraal (Antwerp Central) is the name of the main railway station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the national railway company NMBS
  • Meir is the main shopping street in Antwerp, Belgium. Only the Nieuwstraat / Rue Neuve avenue in Brussels is a more important shopping area in the country. Situated in the centre of Antwerp, Meir connects the Town Hall with the Central Station. Between 2002-2004 it was the most expensive shopping street in the Benelux. Since the opening of the historic Stadsfeestzaal-shopping center in 2007 the Meir regained that position. It has the highest rents of any street in Belgium, at 1,700 €/square metre/year.[1] The name comes from the old Dutch word "meere" (lake). The Meir used to be a so-called "wood lake" (houtmeer), where wood destined for use in furniture would be kept wet for a time.
  • The Grand Place (or 'Grote Markt') of Antwerp is the most famous square in the city. The historic centre of Antwerp is located around the main square and the impressive Notre Dame Cathedral. Around the Grand Place are the famous guild houses, the city hall and numerous restaurants and cafes. Every winter a nice Christmas market and an ice rink are located on the square.

According to a 16th century legend Antwerp owes its name to the giant Druon Antigoon who chopped of the hands of the sailors who did not want to pay toll and who cast them in the Scheldt river. On the Grand Place you will see a statue of the Roman soldier Silvius Brabo who supposedly did the same to the giant after he had slain him. The statue was made by Jef Lambeaux who also made some statues for the gables surrounding the Grand Place, including the equestrian statue on top of the House of Spain building. This 16th century building is the largest house on the square.

Museum Ship Amandine
This large middle-size trawler used to operate in the fishing grounds around Southern Iceland and remained in the North Sea and the Channel during the winter months. From 1974 the 0.129 Amandine became a true Icelandic vessel. The catch consisted mainly of Cod, Haddock, Pollack, Red Mullet, Red Sea Bream, Flounder and Scottish Plaice.
On 3rd March 1995 the Amandine sailed into Oostende for the last time and the curtain fell on the Oostende Iceland Fisheries. The Amandine was restored by the Maritime Site in the old Seghers shi

James Ensor House

In 1917 James Ensor (1860 – 1949) moved to this house after inheriting it from his uncle who had had a shell and souvenir shop in it. He spent the rest of his long life here. After his death the ‘Friends of James Ensor’ society devoted itself to preserving the house as a museum. In 1956 the Ensor House was handed over to the city of Oostende but it suffered from neglect and was even closed to the public. Moreover, there was talk of demolishing it, but things changed in 1973: the building was restored and the museum reopened.
The Ensor House suggestively evokes the world in which Ensor lived. Here you can see the shell and souvenir shop, a documentation room and the salon-studio.

Three Master Mercator

The Arctic traveller Adrien de Gerlache designed this three-master which was built in Scotland. The Mercator had only two commanders: Van de Sande (from 1933) and Ghys (from 1955) and went on 54 voyages. In 1956 the Mercator brought back the remains of Father Damien from Molokai. As a seagoing ambassador the three-master attracted a great deal of attention at world exhibitions and ceremonies, participated in numerous races and won the Oslo-Oostende race.
In 1960 the Mercator sailed into the Port of Antwerp. It was refurbished as a museum ship in 1961. The Mercator has been a jewel in the crown of Oostende since 1964.

North Sea Aquarium

The building of the North Sea Aquarium was erected after WW II as a Shrimp Market. As it remained empty during the 1970s and because several successful tropical fish exhibitions had been held there, it was chosen as a site for a North Sea Aquarium. The opening took place on 11th August 1977.

The museum houses a collection of fossils, shells and dried and stuffed sea creatures as well as 13 aquariums of marine animals and fish from the North Sea, the Channel and the Irish Sea. The fishermen themselves supply the museum with live aquarium material which they bring back from their fishing trips. Each year the Friends of the North Sea Aquarium society presents a Gold, Siler and Bronze Fish to the best suppliers.
